Custom Novelty Cakes for All Occasions
Frequently Asked Questions
Where are you located?
We are located in the Fresno area of Central California. Because part of the business is located in the designer's home, we do not publish our address. For anyone picking up cakes and or coming by for a cake consultation, please call for address and directions.
Do you make your cakes in your home kitchen?
No. It is required by the State of California to have a separate kitchen facility for commercial businesses. We are licensed, permitted and inspected by the Fresno County Health Department just like any other restaurant/food service provider.
Can I stop by anytime and check out your cakes?
Because the business part of the company is home-based, we're not set-up to accommodate walk-in customers. Therefore, we operate by appointment only. Most birthday orders can be handled over the phone. Wedding customers are encouraged to schedule consultation appointments.
How soon in advance do I need to place my order?
Birthday and special occasions: As soon as possible. However, we prefer at least one month’s notice. During wedding season (April – October) more notice may be required and is recommended. Because we are closed Sundays and Mondays, cake pick-ups are available Wednesday – Saturday only.
Weddings/Special Events: It is never too early to book, but here are some guidelines: April – June weddings: 6 – 9 months in advance; July-September weddings: 4-6 months in advance; October: 6 – 9 months in advance; November – March; 3 months in advance. We will do our best to accomodate bookings that are outside those perameters; however, it will be first-come, first-served (pun intended).
Do you ship your cakes?
If you don’t mind a mush pile of cake and icing, yes. Otherwise, no. =)
If I bring a photo of a cake I saw in a magazine, can you duplicate it?
Absolutely. You can bring it in at your consultation or email it to us to get an idea on price and “do-ability”. See the contact page for the direct email address.
I have an invitation for my event. Can you create a cake design based on it?
We love bringing the theme/design of special events to life. Many of our birthday/special event cakes spring from a basic concept/idea that originates from the invitation. This is what your guests see before they even attend the party; so why not coordinate the cake to the theme they’re expecting?
So, how does the ordering process work?
Once we have your date booked, we will schedule a consultation with you. Once we understand your vision, we will provide you with a worksheet listing the design and specifications of your cake with an accompanying contract. This worksheet is a design agreement, and will include either a sketch or a photo of your cake. We will ask for information from you, which may include photos, pictures, color schemes, swatches, etc, to best decorate your cake. We want you to love the final result so much that you tell your friends about us so they can love what we do and then tell their friends.
What is fondant?
Fondant is a smooth, rollable icing that can be used to cover and decorate a cake. While it allows for more creative designs, it has a reputation of not tasting very good. However, we use a recipe that not only looks great, but tastes great too. We ice all our cakes in buttercream before covering them with fondant, which helps keeps the fondant soft and still allows for a great tasting cake underneath the fondant covering.
Do you require a deposit to secure your services?
Yes. To book a date with us, we require either a $25 non-refundable deposit or 50% of your total order, whichever is greater. If 50% is the greater amount, $25 of that amount will become your non-refundable deposit in the event of a cancellation. This can be paid via PayPal with a credit card (plus 3% fee), or a check can be sent by mail. Your entire balance due must be received one month prior to your event. If we are able to accomodate your event within less than the one-month time period, we will require payment in full.
Weddings/Special Events: To book and secure a wedding date, a 50% deposit is required. Most deposits are received following the wedding cake consultation. However, if you know you’d like to book before your consultation, a $250 deposit can be made to reserve your day. More info on the types of wedding cakes we offer can be found here.
Do you accept credit cards?
In a matter of speaking. We understand that buying one of our custom creations may require some "creative budgeting" for some and while we are sympathetic to that situation, we are also navigating the murky waters of merchant credit services. While we would prefer the green stuff or a check, we understand it's not always preferable to our clients. However, we will need to add a 3% transaction fee to cover some of the costs associated with credit card transactions. If you would like to pay via credit card, we will invoice you via PayPal (it's secure and you don't need to have a PayPal account).
Do you deliver?
Delivery is free within a 10-mile radius from our kitchen facility (near Ashlan Ave. & Fwy 168). For locations greater than the 10-mile radius, a $20 delivery fee will be charged, plus a per-mile rate for total miles driven.
You may also elect to pick up your cake (in most instances). However, we require that a waiver be signed by the party picking up the cake and an appropriate mode of transportation for the cake (which is detailed in the contract). Once the cake has left our premises, we cannot be responsible for anything that happens to it in transport.
Why did you choose the name Plum Crazy Cake Company?
Cake designer divine, Launa, has a special place in her heart for her first car -- a 1974 Dodge Dart Sport. And, the color of this little beauty was called Plum Crazy. The car has since went on to greener pastures, but Launa kept the spirit of it alive in several ways -- one of which was in an email address that she used for several years. Those who've known her for a long time, readily associate her with "Plum Crazy." As to whether or not it has anything to do with her personality, well, we'll just leave that one alone...
